And Baby Makes Three

The Brief

I had long completed this guest room when my client asked me to incorporate a nursery space for the long awaited arrival of her granddaughter. Working with a quilt maker / seamstress, we added a cot and cradle using the curtains as the inspiration for an antique style nursery. Taking our forms and colours from the faded curtains, hand sewing details onto the quilt and cradle, we designed something special which my client will be able to hand down her family line.

Having already painted and decorated this room some time before, we wanted to integrate the nursery touches without interfering with the existing colour scheme. I located a soft polka dot wallpaper for the cot wall which visually accentuated the spot in the curtain fabric design thereby making it feel as if it had always been there, giving depth to the existing concept.

Unfortunately I was unable to commercially find a cot bumper or duvet to meld with the colour scheme, but by drawing inspiration from the curtaining my seamstress / quilt maker and I fashioned something special and unique. Matching the colours of the curtains and taking forms from the design, we connected the cot to the curtains in such a way that it seemed that it had always been in the room. We also linked the crib to the original theme with beige ginghams, perfectly coloured cream and peach roses, polka dots and soft off-white cottons. By sourcing a dove grey voile which softened the curtains, I was able to lift the existing curtains and darken the room making the environment more conducive to a resting baby.
